The Brahma Viharas or the Divine Abidings are relational practices that support our practice of Insight Meditation. Softening and opening the mind and heart, each of these four offers us a way to orient ourselves in the face of the inevitable challenges of life. The most well-known is Metta, usually translated as Loving-Kindness or Unconditional Friendliness. Metta sees the good in ourselves and others. The practice begins with extending well wishes to ourselves and then gradually extends outwards, recognizing the universal wish for happiness and well-being. Karuna or compassion connects with the suffering we see in the world, mudita appreciates the beauty, joy and success we are witness to and uppekha keeps us in balance, recognizing the changing nature of reality and allowing the mystery of life to unfold.
