Once a month, from January to April, Margo will lead a half-day retreat at Unfolding Body in Cumberland. Each of these retreats offers participants the opportunity to deepen their practice of mindful awareness, while exploring what are called the Five Spiritual Faculties—faith, energy, mindfulness, concentration and wisdom.
Sunday, January 11 Begin in Stillness: A Morning of Practice Devoted to Faith
Where do we place our faith or confidence? In this first retreat of the new year, we will clarify the Buddhist understanding of faith and explore the role of faith in a very secular world.
Sunday, February 9 Caring for the Source: Harnessing our Life Energy for the Good
Gaining clarity about how we expend our precious life energy is the first step to making wise choices. How are we spending our days? In distraction or connection?
Sunday, March 8 Mindfulness: A Practice of Remembering
In recent years, neuroscience has revealed with startling clarity what the Buddha was teaching more than 2500 years ago: “Whatever we think and frequently ponder upon, that becomes the inclination of the mind.” In other words, it’s good to know where we are placing our attention because that is what is shaping our world-view and the very architecture of the brain. The practice of mindfulness engages us in a practice of whole-hearted attention that has profound implications for how we live our lives.
Sunday, April 12 Collecting the Mind: Living with Depth
The fourth of the Five Spiritual Faculties is concentration. We might ask ourselves, what supports a collected mind? In a world of endless possibilities, it’s easy to feel stretched in many directions. Concentration or samadhi is the direct result of continuity of mindfulness; it is an experience of gathering the attention that deeply nourishes the heart and mind, bringing depth to our relationships, work and engagement with the world.
